Principal Aspects of Strategy Execution and Strategic Management Model

# Strategy Execution Process

## What is Strategy Execution?

Strategy execution is an operations-oriented activity aimed at shaping the performance of core business activities in a strategy-supportive manner.

A manager converting strategic plans into results must:

  • Direct organisational change
  • Motivate people
  • Build and strengthen company competencies and competitive capabilities
  • Create a strategy-supportive work culture
  • Meet or beat performance targets

> Good strategy execution requires strong 'fits' between: Strategy ↔ Capabilities, Strategy ↔ Structure, Strategy ↔ Climate & Culture

## Principal Aspects of Strategy Execution

#AspectDescription
1BudgetingSteer ample resources into activities critical to strategic success
2StaffingBuild the right team; strengthen strategy-supportive competencies; organise work effort
3Policies & proceduresEnsure policies facilitate (not impede) effective execution
4Best practicesUse proven methods for core activities; pursue continuous improvement
5Information systemsInstall systems enabling personnel to carry out strategic roles day in, day out
6MotivationEnergise people to pursue target objectives
7Culture & climateCreate conditions conducive to successful strategy implementation
8Internal leadershipDrive implementation forward; address stumbling blocks quickly

## Strategic Management Model

The strategic management process has three major, continuously cycling components:

```
[Vision / Mission / Goals / Objectives]
Strategy Formulation
Strategy Implementation
Strategy Evaluation
↑_____________|
```

Key characteristics of the model:

1. The process is dynamic and continuous — a change in any component can necessitate changes in all others

2. It is not performed in lockstep — there is give-and-take among hierarchical levels

3. Most organisations conduct formal reviews semi-annually to update vision/mission, SWOT, strategies, objectives, and performance

4. Creativity, good communication, and feedback are needed throughout

Worked example

### Example 1

Principal aspects question — theory-based (PYQ May 2018, RTP Nov 2018, PYQ Jan 2021, RTP Nov 2021):

Required: Enumerate/explain the principal aspects of the strategy-execution process.

Answer framework: Open by defining strategy execution as an operations-oriented activity requiring good 'fits' between strategy, capabilities, structure, and culture. Then enumerate all eight aspects: budgeting, staffing, policies & procedures, best practices, information systems, motivation, culture & climate, and internal leadership. Note that execution requires converting strategic plans into concrete actions.

### Example 2

Strategic Management Model — diagrammatic (PYQ Nov 2018, RTP Nov 2019):

Required: Present a diagrammatic representation of the strategic management model / explain the strategic management process with a model.

Answer: Draw the cyclic model: Vision/Mission/Goals → Strategy Formulation → Strategy Implementation → Strategy Evaluation → (feedback loop back to beginning). Explain: (1) starting point is identifying vision, mission, goals, objectives; (2) process is dynamic and continuous — change in any component affects all others; (3) formulation, implementation, evaluation must be performed continually, not just year-end; (4) not a lockstep process — hierarchical give-and-take; (5) semi-annual formal reviews are common.

⚠️ Common exam mistakes

  • Listing only 4-5 aspects when 8 are expected — memorise the full list: Budgeting, Staffing, Policies, Best Practices, Information Systems, Motivation, Culture, Leadership.
  • Treating strategy execution as one-time — the strategic management model is explicitly continuous and dynamic.
  • Ignoring the 'fits' concept — strategy execution is not just about implementing a plan; it requires fit between strategy and capabilities/structure/culture.
  • In the model diagram, drawing it as a linear flow rather than a cycle with feedback loops — the evaluation stage feeds back to all earlier stages.
