Responsibilities of a Strategic Leader (CEO)

# Responsibilities of a Strategic Leader

A strategic leader (typically the CEO) must navigate complex, cognitively demanding competitive environments and drive the organisation toward its vision.

## Seven Core Responsibilities

#ResponsibilityWhat It Means
1Making strategic decisionsSetting the direction of the organisation
2Formulating policies and action plansTranslating strategic decisions into implementable steps
3Ensuring effective communicationMaintaining information flow across all levels
4Managing human capital★ Most critical skill — recruiting, developing, and retaining talent
5Managing changeLeading the organisation through transitions smoothly
6Creating and sustaining corporate cultureBuilding values and norms that support strategy
7Sustaining high performanceDelivering consistent results over time

## Key Insight

Strategic leaders do not just plan — they inspire, communicate, and execute. Their unique value is dealing with diverse and cognitively complex competitive situations that characterise today's landscape.

Worked example

### Example 1

KaAthens Ltd. / Aditya Bandopadhyay (RTP Nov 2018, May 2020): KaAthens Ltd. is a global FMCG company whose founding CEO retired due to poor health. Aditya (IIT engineer, very young) has been appointed CEO. Being new to the role, he is unsure of his responsibilities.

Required: What are the responsibilities of Aditya as CEO?

Answer framework: As an effective strategic leader, Aditya must deal with diverse and cognitively complex competitive situations. His responsibilities include: making strategic decisions; formulating policies and action plans; ensuring effective communication; managing human capital (most critical); managing change; creating and sustaining a strong corporate culture; and sustaining high performance over time.

### Example 2

Mathew & Sons Ltd. / Marshal (MTP1 Nov 2018): Mr. Mathew retires and hands over leadership to his son Marshal (engineering degree from USA, very young and unclear about his role).

Required: What are Marshal's responsibilities as CEO?

Answer framework: Same seven responsibilities apply — this question tests whether students understand that the framework is universal for any strategic leader, regardless of company size or industry.

⚠️ Common exam mistakes

  • Listing only 3-4 responsibilities instead of all seven — examiners expect a comprehensive answer.
  • Writing generic 'management' duties (planning, organising, controlling) instead of strategic-leadership-specific responsibilities.
  • Forgetting to flag 'managing human capital' as the most critical skill — this qualifier is often asked directly.
  • Confusing strategic leader responsibilities with operational manager duties; strategic leaders set direction, they do not micromanage tasks.
