Consumption Levels

## Consumption Levels

Consumption = amount of raw material consumed to produce the finished goods.

Three standard levels are used in inventory formulas:

LevelDescription
Minimum ConsumptionLowest usage rate (e.g., geysers in summer)
Average Consumption(Maximum + Minimum) ÷ 2
Maximum ConsumptionHighest usage rate (e.g., ACs in winter — analogy: peak season usage)

### Why these levels matter

  • Maximum consumption → Re-order Level (ensures you re-order before stock-out under peak demand)
  • Minimum consumption → Maximum Stock (ensures you don't overstock when usage is slow)
  • Average consumption → Minimum Stock and Danger Level

Worked example

### Example 1

Min consumption = 40 units/day; Max consumption = 80 units/day.

Average Consumption = (80 + 40) / 2 = 60 units/day

⚠️ Common exam mistakes

  • Using annual consumption directly without converting to daily/weekly rate when lead time is in days/weeks.
  • Swapping max consumption and min consumption in ROL vs Max Stock formulas.
