Lead Time

## Lead Time

Lead Time is the time taken from placing an order till the material reaches the stores (godown).

It has four standard variants used across inventory-level formulas:

TypeMeaningExample
Emergency Lead TimeTime taken in an urgent procuremente.g., 1 day
Minimum Lead TimeShortest normal lead timee.g., 3 days
Average Lead Time(Min + Max) ÷ 2e.g., (3+7)/2 = 5 days
Maximum Lead TimeLongest normal lead timee.g., 7 days

### Why this matters

Lead time directly drives:

  • Re-order Level (uses max consumption × max lead time)
  • Minimum Stock (uses avg lead × avg consumption)
  • Maximum Stock (uses min lead × min consumption)
  • Danger Level (uses emergency lead × avg consumption)

Worked example

### Example 1

Given Min lead = 3 days, Max lead = 7 days:

Average Lead Time = (3 + 7) / 2 = 5 days

⚠️ Common exam mistakes

  • Confusing emergency lead time with minimum lead time — they are different concepts. Emergency is the urgent procurement time used only for Danger Level.
  • Treating average lead time as a simple guess instead of (Min + Max)/2.
